Word Clouds

Via Tim ( who got it via Dynamist) ; just when I was worrying about the blog being boring and ranty and one dimensional - here is damning proof, discovered when I took the opportunity to check out the most common words on my blog, via Snapshirt's Word Cloud .

Not many surprises there, really. Go try it, it's quite compulsive. Tim's, Justin's and DK's can be viewed here.

I tried this and got rather odd results. MatGB suggests removing your sidebars and links before you do it.

Hmm, interesting. I just tried it and I think I may also be guilty of being "boring and ranty". Still, I decided to keep a blog as an alternative to screaming out of the window so it was always bound to be ranty. Thanks for the insight.

It has a sweary word filter.
I got a totally inaccurate result, which featured the word 'pretty'.

That can't be right....

Thanks for the insightful commentary. I get where you're coming from, and I completely appreciate what you're doing here with your blog.

Finding my blog and having only that entry about the difficult time I had in London to catch your eye was an unfortunate coincidence. I do have good things to say about London, but for the purposes of that entry, I left them out. I had planned on writing about the positives at another point (as there actually were several things I was very sad to leave).

However, as a whole, (and as a New Yorker, I can fully relate to this) London is a tough city. When you go there with no job, no place to live, and no friends, it's really difficult to make a comfortable life. I struggled a lot. I tried to make friends, but a lot of people honestly were rude to me. Even my co-workers (who travel often) told me that people in New York were generally more open to speaking to strangers. I didn't go to a single fast food restaurant (despite being American, I despise fast food), I tried to go to nice restaurants to eat, but often couldn't afford it because of my minimum wage salary. I didn't go to a single "toursity" venue other than the historic and artistic sites.

I'll admit that the bad teeth thing was a cheap shot, and was intended as a joke, but it's unfair of you to label me (as many people there did) some sort of tourist who doesn't give the city a chance and doesn't honestly try to appreciate what it has to offer. I saved up money, left a job I enjoyed, and went there out of my own accord. It wasn't the first European city I lived in, and I don't believe a weeklong trip is enough to understand the complexities of another city/country. I still plan to return at some point (when I can afford to really appreciate it).

There are a lot of blogs out there that bash New York City. I start to get offended, but I'm reminded of how difficult this city must be as well. I'm mindful of the fact that a lot of Americans are more ignorant than others, and they often piss me off also. I keep in mind how hard it was for me to meet people I could trust. So to say I somehow deserved a less than pleasant experience is saying that any person who has the courage to move to a big, frightening city (especially one where your kind is not exactly welcome) and doesn't fall in love, land a dream job, and have an all-around jolly time, brought it upon themselves.

Once again, I really enjoy your blog, and even if you don't like mine, I'm going to go ahead and link you. Keep an eye out for a future post about the positives of London life once I successfully yank the pole outta my ass.

Cheers!

Dr Deb - they can indeed be made into a T shirt!

:-)

Thanks for dropping in CEO and I am sorry I was a bit cross about your 'screw you London ' post: it was unfair because London is a tough place and London on minimum wage is a frustrating experience as I know. If you do want to come back, check diamond geezers blog ( on my blogroll) as he can inspire and charm the most cynical Londoner or the most jaded visitor with his fascinating glimpses into the hidden bits of the city,

oh, and Time Out has lots of cheap/free/interesting/mental things to do in it as well if you look carefully in the listings...

thanks for dropping by the blog. I enjoyed yours
