'I have to do this thing for our future'

"Sweetheart, not long to go now. And I'm going to really, really miss you a lot.

"I'm thinking about it already. Look, I absolutely love you to bits and you have been the happiest thing in my life. You and your mum, absolutely brilliant.

"I don't know what else to say. I just wish I could have been part of your life, especially these growing up – these next months, they're really special with you learning to walk and things.

"I just so much wanted to be with you but I have to do this thing for our future and it will be for the best, inshallah, in the long run.

"That's the most important thing.

"You make plenty of Dua for you guys and you've got loads of people to look after you and keep an eye on you.

"But most importantly I entrust you to Allah and let Allah take care of you.

"And I'm doing what I'm doing for the sake of Islam, not, you know, it's not for materialist or worldly benefits."

The video shows a doting young father, kissing the head of his brown-eyed two-year-old baby girl, nestling in his arms in a pink dress. She is reaching for the camera with her chubby hands and kicking her legs with happiness. Her smiling 'uncles' laugh as the father records his farewell on a home-made video. One 'uncle picks her up, doffs his cap and places it on the baby's head, another flexes his biceps and grins for the camera.

'What's your words of wisdom?', the father asks the men.

' A few words of wisdom - kill everyone there is', another man replies. Smiling broadly.

I could barely make it out, but there it was. The video of a man going to Pakistan ,who at that point, in November 2004, did not expect to come back. The tapes were handed over by his wife to a friend, who passed it to the police after four bombs killed 52 innocent passengers and injured hundreds more.

The loving father was Mohammed Siddique Khan, the 'uncles', his fellow-suicide-bombers Hasib Hussein and Shehzad Tanweer. The other uncle, his alleged close friend and conspirator Wahid Ali.

I watched the video in an annexe to Kingston Crown Court with some of the bereaved families and it made me want to weep, because there was such love, and such hate, which became such murderous poison, as he cradled a sweet pink rose of a child, amongst his laughing friends.

It was one of the last videos shown after a day of the CPS's careful presentation in their opening speeches. We saw CCTV footage - never seen in public before - of the 7/7 bombers sky blue Nissan Micra, hired from a Leeds car rental firm, leaving for London in the early hours of 7 July 2005, departing from 18 Alexander Grove, (the bomb factory address.)

Stopping at Woodall Services on the westbound M1 at 4.53am, Shehzad Tanweer in white trousers and white branded sports top with a black coat stopping to put petrol in at 4.51am, then entering the petrol station shop at 4.54am, returning with a carrier bag of goods, ( sandwiches and snacks) - and the car driving away at 5.14am.

Then, fellow-bomber Germaine Lindsey, who bombed my train and killed 26 fellow-passengers, waiting at Luton station. Walking from the car park where he parked his burgundy Fiat Bravo near to the entrance of Luton station at 6.41am. Moving about, sometimes off-camera in the ticket hall for three minutes. Walking to the exit again, his mobile in his left hand, at 6.44am. Getting back in his car and repositioning the Fiat nearer the ticket hall.

At 6.51am the Micra arriving containing his three companions, his fellow shahid - and parking next to the Fiat in the wet, puddly car park. At 6.53 there is movement between the two vehicles and the boot is opened and closed several times. At 7.14am Lindsey goes back into the ticket hall, a minute later, he returns to the group and at 7.16am the men put on their rucksacks and leave the car park for the station. At 7.25 the men are on the concourse, getting onto a Thameslink train bound for London. At 8.25am the men arrive at Kings Cross station, move to the London Underground network and separate at 8.26am.

They apparently believe that the next time they see each other will be less than an hour later in the gardens of Paradise.

Next we saw footage of the exploded train at Edgware Rd. We saw footage of the Aldgate train explosion, seen from the Liverpool St platform it departed from. Passengers crouching in shock, smoke pluming and billowing, two police officers going to the platform. Then the same platform again from a different angle. Then stills of the exploded carriage are shown. Torn apart, as lives of the living and dead were torn apart.

Next, we are shown stills of the Piccadilly line train, the one I was on. I have seen the pictures of the inside of my carriage, but these were from the outside, and they were worse, because I could see how close I was to the bomb, and the debris on the tracks. Not bodies, just clothes. They had carried the broken bodies away. But I saw what I thought were clothes on the day; they were not piles of clothes, they were people. I remembered.

Then we saw the CCTV of teenager Hasib Hussein, who did not detonate his bomb at 8.50/8.51am as his 'brothers' had done.

We heard how witnesses saw Hussein waiting on a bench on the Northern line platform at 8.45am, exiting the Northern/Victoria line escalator,

We then saw CCTV of him exiting Kings Cross Underground station at 8.54am, then heading through Boots at 8.59am. Moving across the main railway station concourse at 9am, bending over outside next door shop WH Smiths where I have stopped so many times, and fiddling with his rucksack. Making a purchase, something that looks like a battery at 9.04am. (The woman serving him reaches down to the side of where the cigarettes are sold and hands him a small item; from memory, that is exactly where the batteries are. I cannot see what else it could be)

At 9.05, Hussein leaves the King's Cross concourse, heading out of the railway station, and by 9.07am he is out of the station, crossing York Way and heading into McDonalds at 9.15am , as rain falls. Two minutes later he is out of McDonalds and heading up Gray's Inn Rd, towards Euston Rd, making calls on his mobile. By 9.20am he is in Euston Rd, having slipped on a pair of sunglasses.

He took the 91 bus to Euston Square, where the driver told the passengers to get off. Hussein boards the number 30 bus, heading for Tavistock Square.

Then we saw CCTV footage of the exploding bus shot from inside the reception of the British Medical Association. The man at the desk, a woman in reception, ducking for cover, as the explosion happens, then the receptionist man going to the door, where the red bus, torn apart is smoking outside. Thirteen more people are dead. Next we saw the footage from the bus in front of the No.30, the passengers jerking in shock as the bus explodes behind them.

For two years, conspiracy theorists have been saying there is no CCTV of the 77/ bombers save one grainy shot, (which they say is faked). There is, I have seen it played in a public court. They could have seen it too, if they had bothered to come. It is real, it was always real. Why do they peddle their lies about it?

The defence are not contesting it; they are not contesting these facts - that Khan, Tanweer, Lindsey and Hussein set off with home made bombs and met up at Luton and took the bombs in rucksacks to London where they split up and detonated them as you have heard and people have seen. And felt, and died as a result of them.

I hope that this will be an end to this filthy lie. That the 7/7 bombers did not do it. I am weary of these lies after over two years of hearing them and seeing them spread on the internet.

And we saw many other things presented by the prosecution, which the court was told helped to show the 'mindset' of the men who claim that their friendship with the 7/7 bombers was innocent, their reconnaissance trip to London a tourist trip, one of their number's association with a known terrorist merely a coincidence, their trips to Pakistan ...more on that next week.

The trial continues on Monday. I will be there.

There is more I could write, but I am so tired, and this is long enough for now.

It must have been a difficult day, reliving 7/7. It is almost impossible to reconcile loving images like this with what they went out to do on 7/7. I don’t have an explanation but there is something in the attachment to a philosophy of hate that splits the mind in two – the kind father on one side, the mad killer on the other. Hitler was kind to animals; Goebbels had a warm family life. I have a fear that the root of the hate of the 7/7 bombers lies not in disadvantage, or social deprivation, or racial intolerance but in their faith. I would like to think otherwise but Islam is not forgiving to those not of its faith and those who want to hate us will find their justifications there.

Hi Rachel I can’t for one minute imagine what that dreaded day in July was like for those, like yourself, who when through that horrid experience. I also can’t imagine what it must be like for you to relive the event, even though you have told the story several times in the media and in your book.
Obviously I can’t know what emotions you experienced looking into their faces, but I was you I don’t know if I would have the fortitude to be able to sit there calmly, you are quite possible one of the strongest people around, and having seen you speak on the media, it looks as though you have come out of this horrific even remarkable strong.

Thank you, Rachel, for the best journalism on today's events. The Guardian does not even mention CCTV and the BBC just says:
"The prosecution went on to show the jury CCTV footage of the events of 7 July 2005, the first time the material had been seen other than by police and security services.

The footage captured the four bombers assembling in the early hours of the morning, heading to Luton railway station and pulling on the rucksacks containing their bombs before catching a commuter train to London."

The Times reports:
"Colour footage shows the four passing through the barriers at Luton station each carrying a bulky back-pack. The camera tracks them on the platform before they board the train to London at 7.25am. An hour later comes the last sighting of the four together as they arrive at King’s Cross Thameslink."

Is this right? No hugging, etc? Nothing at King's Cross mainline or the Underground?

I think only the most twisted would turn this event into a 'conspiracy theory'. It's disgusting that people would even suggest such a thing. I know of two people indirectly, who were killed in July 7th and suggestions of a conspiracy theory are highly disrespectful to both the dead, the injured, and their families. No doubt the most hardened conspiracy theorists will claim the videos were a Photoshop job... I hope you got some sleep.

This post is very good. Better than any press / media coverage i haev seen. It convey's the horror well and makes me sad.

What else is sad, is the first comment on this site. What i believe is the root of our problem .....

I would like to think otherwise but Islam is not forgiving to those not of its faith and those who want to hate us will find their justifications there."

People like this, will only bring more terror.

Is is exactly the fact that "Racial Intolerance" exists that is the problem. That our lives (i.e. one soldier) is more important than a hundred Islamic people. The fact we are helping with a US crusade for Oil, devastating whole countries with no "SORRY" or anything.

Unless we pull our troops out and reinstate our morals, then this horrible thing will more than likely happen again, and again. We could also stop breaking international law when using our armed forces and stop killing innocents.... You never know, that might help !!

master problem - I understand your point entirely about Western amoral intervention, this is not a recent problem but something that has happened for years and something we should all be ashamed of our government for.

However, all religions are based on belief and faith, not logic or truth or reality. Dealing with people who have a genuine religious belief is always going to be difficult as their arguments have no place in reality.

It seems strange how religious people can get involved with politics, truth and justice yet still maintain they are led and obey a fairy in the sky.

This applies to all religions, Bush and Blair in particular have avoided the judgement of mankind saying that they will only be judged by god etc.

Most intolerance has little to do with race and more to do with religon.

I think it's more a case of people selecting their precise brand of religion to suit their predispositions - religion can provide a capacious cloak for any number of evils, but then, so can any number of political and commitments (including love of family).

Congratulations to you, Rachel, on such clearheaded reporting and reflection. What comes over so strongly is your commitment to the simple, empirical truth, which is in the end the only thing that will persuade the crackpots of this world to calm down. Fortis est veritas, et praevalebit.

Rachel,

As far as I am aware there has been no CCTV evidence of the 7/7 accused in London presented in the public domain, prior to this Kingston trial. It is also noted that the newspapers seem to be in a muddle as to what CCTV footage was actually shown – your account seems to be one of the fullest!

You can hardly blame concerned people rightfully requesting such CCTV evidence, which if released and vindicated, would shut up and deter what you call ‘conspiracy theorists’. (Note that the court indictment contains the word conspiracy - so the jury are being asked to theorize on a conspiracy charge, & also note that the reprehensible phrase 'and others' (unknown)’ is also on the the indictment. Who are these others unknown - will there be further trials in the future?

I’m afraid that unless the CCTV footage shown in Kingston Court is subsequently released to the public, there will be more misgivings regarding the official story.

I also note that Mohammed Junaid Babar is to be giving evidence (via videolink) in court. This suggests more links between the 7/7 events & the Operation Crevice (fertiliser) plot.

Rachel, with all due respect, the reason that some people question what happened on 7 July 2005 is down to the government being a bunch of lying murderous bastards who start wars on false premises. Your anger at those who would like to see due process applied in establishing the guilt of the four men from Leeds seems as misplaced as the certainty others have in their theories of 'what really happened'. I do appreciate that you've been hassled by nutters though.

A person who looks to Islam for his justification - and finds it. That's the problem.

My point was that, given this government's track record, those whom Rachel angrily dismisses as 'conspiraloons' can perhaps be forgiven for their suspicion of secret service treachery. Notwithstanding what Rachel is reporting here, the guilt of these four men from Leeds was established fundamentally by the media trumpeting 'it was these here four muslim blokes what done it'. A lot of people think the official narrative stinks. Rachel herself calls for an inquiry. I don't understand why she reserves her sternest tone for J7 and the like.

1. This was the first day of the trial and was the prosecution's opening statement. It is an overview of the Crown's case. You can expect to see more evidence presented - and challenged in much more detail later.

2. To make the case against the 3 men in the dock, the CPS have to

a) prove that MSK, Tanweer, Lindsey, Hussein bombed London with home-made bombs on 7/7 as per.

b) that the 3 men in the dock conspired to help them do so, which includes showing their links with the 7/7 bombers, their association and mindset and sympathies, as well as evidence linking them to attack-planning and reconnaissance.

Please note *deep breath*.

The men in the dock who knew and were close to MSK et al, and their defence team

are NOT challenging that MSK etc bombed London as per a) .They accept a).

They will argue b), the CPS have said as much.

Got it, conspiracy theorists? They are not challenging that part of the CPS argument, the evidence ( forensic and CCTV) which shows the 7/7 bombers did it.

That means that they accept it as true. Truthful. Factual. A Fact.

I wish the bloody so-called self-styled July 7th 'truthseekers' on the internet were equally as able to grasp reality and facts.

Do you not think, if you were facing 30 years for participating in a bomb blot and helping bombers - who were innocent and who never bombed London because the bombs were in fact a dastardly plot by Jews/Mossad/M15/Illuminati/whoever to discredit Islam -

do you not think you might mention it and run it as part of your defence?

It was explained in PUBLIC court - you could have seen it for yourself if you had been there - that in some instances the timestamps on cameras were wrong - therefore the real time and the timestamp time were both given.

This isn't a 'lie' - it's a case of the cameras timers not being set accurately - which is apparently, not that unusual. The timer on my computer is a different time to the one on my cooker, and the one on my mobile is five minutes fast.

I had to take notes very fast in court. There were 2 times shown at the start of each clip, and I took the one on the left, the first one, which I understood to be the accurate one.

The corrected Home Office narrative now reads:

"06.49: The Micra arrives at Luton and parks next to the Brava. The 4 men get out of their respective cars, look in the boots of both, and appear to move items between them. They each put on rucksacks which CCTV shows are large and full. The 4 are described as looking as if they were going on a camping holiday.

One car contained explosive devices of a different and smaller kind from those in the rucksacks. It is not clear what they were for, but they may have been for self-defence or diversion in case of interception during the journey given their size; that they were in the car rather than the boot; and that they were left behind. Also left in the Micra were other items consistent with the use of explosives. A 9mm handgun was also found in the Brava. The Micra had a day parking ticket in the window, perhaps to avoid attention, the Brava did not.

07:14: Lindsay walks through the entrance foyer of the station, walks to the ticket hall and appears to check the departure board. Lindsay then walks back out of the station to rejoin Tanweer, Khan and Hussain at the rear of their vehicles. The 4 then put on their rucksacks and walk towards the station. They enter Luton station and go through the ticket barriers together. It is not known where they bought their tickets or what sort of tickets they possessed, but they must have had some to get on to the platform.

07.21: The 4 are caught on CCTV together heading to the platform for the King’s Cross Thameslink train. They are casually dressed, apparently relaxed. Tanweer’s posture and the way he pulls the rucksack on to his shoulder as he walks, suggests he finds it heavy. It is estimated that in each rucksack was 2-5 kg of high explosive. Tanweer is now wearing dark tracksuit bottoms. There is no explanation for this change at present."

Ignore the fact that it says they put on their rucksacks twice. This could be just poor proofreading. One must be grateful to the authorities for telling us, after nearly three years, that the CCTV clock was 6 minutes fast.

Any shots of buying tickets? And what was the colour of Tanweer's trousers. Was Lindsay carrying a Tesco bag?

Why not come to Kingston and watch the trial for yourself?

The CCTV showed Lindsey in the ticket hall, the ticket machines were off shot and so was he for some of the time.

I can't remember about the trousers or the brand of the plastic bag or if he was carrying one, for Christ's sake, can you remember what colour tie Jeremy Paxman wore on Newsnight last Thursday?

I had enough on my mind with taking notes and watching it and processing my emotions
during what was an emotional and shocking experience of watching the murderers walking to their deaths - next to families who had lost their loved ones as a result of their bombs. You see, there are real people with real feelings involved in this.

"One must be grateful to the authorities for telling us, after nearly three years, that the CCTV clock was 6 minutes fast."

Several points ;

1. CCTV of the house in Leeds, prompts the question, when did this start and why ? This is a major puzzle as the Leeds connection was not made until one of the bombers nothers informed the Police. Apparently.

2. The Khan "Goodbye" film is entirely unrelated to the bombing trip.

3. Nothing you have so clearly related (for which many thanks - but the authorities should have saved you the job by releasing the films for the press / TV) destroys the case that the 4 were under the belief that they were drug couriers and unware of the contents of their rucsacs.

Who 'got' to him out there? Nobody knows yet, but his calls to Hasina tell you the date when he said he was coming back. Planning for 7/7 commenced on his arrival back in the UK.

I think its incredibly sad that so many people are hell-bent upon making 7/7 sound like some grand conspiracy theory.

Its very simple...52 people died that day. Hundreds were injured. The survivors have to live with the memory of this traumatic event forever.

In our somewhat ordinary lives, something like this is probably the biggest thing that'll ever happen to us. Keep things in perspective...7/7 could've happened to any one of us, so lets not mock the dead or those who have survived.

This trial isn't a game or a playground for various whimsical musings. It has serious implications for everyone...the men charged, the victims, the survivors, the public.

The very least that we can do is to present a united front and to observe this trial over the next few months.

To those who love conspiracy theories...you have the luxury of sitting here today and typing away all sorts of fanciful thoughts. I doubt very much whether you would be inclined to do the same had you been more personally involved with the events of 7/7.

To Rachel, I hope and pray that observing this trial makes you stronger and gives you the peace and answers you, including other survivors, are looking for.

All the very best.

Plain and simply if people want 'conspiraloons' (i.e normal people who have the brevity to ask questions others dont) to stop commenting and making 'absurd' suggestions then the public need to have unmitigated access to this evidence (for those unable to make it to Kingston). The issue is not whether explosions occured and innocent people suffered (I myself swallowed the official story up until recently) but who is really behind these vicious acts. Would it be any surprise to us that the glorious kingdom we live in would kill, maim etc to further its own interest and the demonising of Islam? Not personally but, hey Im not party to having an opinion because I havent seen the "evidence "- and what part of this evidence (forensic or otherwise) proves conclusively that these four guys had with them, and indeed detonated these devices? People ask questions when they do not have answers and, sadly this is the case, I feel my young son has a right to live in a free world, but unfortunately will not be possible unless people ask questions and question the official story. We are not surprised when we discover the government lied about WMD in Iraq etc to kill and maim thousands and deploy Phosporous devices which even today cause birth deformities in Fallujah but we fnd it hard to conceive that they could orchestrate the deaths of 50+ plus people when ten times that have been killed not on a tube but in a serving soldiers uniform? Please read between the lines because there is nothing people hate more than an inquisitive mind. I take it everyone here is aware of http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/panorama/3715899.stm where the BBC (with assistance from Mr Power) envisioned terror attacks on London via 3 tube bombs? Coincidence? Maybe, but the people deserve answers, more importantly the families of the dead WANT answers....
