Thank you for responding so powerfully to the odious Mr Akehurst at his site. I'm afraid I couldn't face it there for fear that I'd be the subject of one of his patronising replies, hence my lengthy post last night. I voted Labour in the past, but he - and virtually everyone in government that has occupied a ministerial post at the Home Office since 1997 - has rather put me off ever voting for them again.
